Först och främst: glöm allt om filmen från 2013. Istället för hjärndöd actionorienterad handling, har Max Brooks hållit en kurs bestående av detaljrika och levande intervjuer av personer från runt om i världen hur de upplevde zombiekatastrofen från början till slut. Spännande och inte allt för orealistisk (utifrån bokens utveckling) hur en modern värld skulle hantera de levande döda i sin värsta form. Man blir tagen av de överlevandes erfarenheter och man funderar själv hur man skulle ha reagerat.
