Beskrivning
The book aims to help students, researchers and interested practitioners monitor and model changes in land use and land cover, such as deforestation, cropland expansion, ecosystem degradation and urban sprawl, using the popular, free-and-open-source R environment. It bridges the wide pedagogical gap between basic GIS and R texts and advanced R analyses published in scientific journals.Using real-world worked examples, the book demonstrates the complete operational chain for land use change analysis and modelling of land use futures. Clearly structured chapters take the reader from data acquisition through change map comparison, estimation of accuracy, analysis and quantification of change sequences, to statistical modelling of drivers of change, model development and estimation of model goodness-of-fit.Key Features:• Includes exercises in each chapter that make use of a wide range of supplementary materials and third-party datasets available online.• All the code necessary to follow the exercises is provided in the book. Datasets are available on Zenodo at: https://zenodo.org/communities/hewitt_mas_mmluccr. The SIMLANDER and APoLUS models, which are used extensively, are also freely available online at https://simlander.wordpress.com/.

Richard J Hewitt is a Ramón y Cajal senior research fellow at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). His principal focus is on integrated land use modelling, geographical information systems and environmental policy around climate, land use and energy, and especially applied to vulnerable natural ecosystems and climate risks to human society. He is a recommender (associate editor) for two Peer Community Initiatives (PCI), PCI Ecology and PCI Archaeology. He is the developer and maintainer of SIMLANDER and APoLUS cellular automata land use change models, and author of over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, 4 books and 12 book chapters. Jean-François Mas is a tenured professor at the Centre for Research in Environmental Geography (CIGA), National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His research focuses on remote sensing, land use/cover change monitoring and modelling, and the accuracy assessment of spatial data, with a strong commitment to free and open-source software in geography. He is a member of Mexico's National System of Researchers at its highest level, has supervised more than 25 postgraduate students, and is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles.
