Dr. David Hackam is the Garrett Professor and Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Johns Hopkins University and Pediatric Surgeon in Chief and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. He earned his MD from the University of Western Ontario and completed his PhD in Cell Biology and General Surgery training at the University of Toronto, followed by a Pediatric Surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hackam specializes in managing complex surgical disorders in newborns, particularly necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and authored the first textbook on NEC. His research focuses on understanding NEC's pathogenesis and developing novel therapies, leading to six patents and several therapeutics in clinical development. Funded by the NIH for more than 20 years, he holds multiple research awards and grants, and has held leadership roles in several prestigious surgical organizations.
