Submarine Cables and Umbilicals

This book provides an integrated treatment of the design and analysis of submarine power cables and umbilicals. It combines analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches to address the behaviour of complex multilayered and helically structured systems under tension, bending, torsion, pressure, and combined loading, while also considering electrical and thermal effects. The book is organised into three parts. Part I develops the mechanical analysis of submarine power cables, progressing from system-level behaviour to local cross-sectional mechanics and reduced-unit-cell modelling, with applications to tension, bending, torsion, corrosion damage, and combined loading. Part II extends this framework to multiscale and multiphysics problems in dynamic submarine power cables, including global cable response, fatigue, thermo-electro-mechanical coupling, current-carrying capacity, electromagnetic losses, and insulation behavior. Part III provides a life-cycle treatment of umbilicals, covering overall and cross-sectional design, mechanical analysis, manufacturing, testing, and installation, together with a detailed tension-torsion case study.
