Don Quixote de la Mancha (1605) is one of the classic texts of Western literature and the foundation of European fiction. Yet Cervantes himself remains an enigmatic figure. Anthony J. Cascardi is Professor of Spanish, Comparative Literature, and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the Spanish Golden Age, literature and philosophy, and aesthetics.
