Satanic Verses

Salman Rushdie is the author of fourteen previous novels, including Midnight’s Children (for which he won the Booker Prize and the Best of the Booker), Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Moor’s Last Sigh, and Quichotte, all of which have been shortlisted for the Booker Prize; a collection of stories, East, West; a memoir, Joseph Anton; a work of reportage, The Jaguar Smile; and three collections of essays, most recently Languages of Truth. His many awards include the Whitbread Prize for Best Novel, which he won twice; the PEN/Allen Foundation Literary Service Award; the National Arts Award; the French Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger; the European Union’s Aristeion Prize for Literature; the Budapest Grand Prize for Literature; and the Italian Premio Grinzane Cavour. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University. He is a former president of PEN America. His books have been translated into over forty languages.

   Satanic Verses

   Satanic Verses är en bra roman. Det är väldigt spännande att läsa den här boken. När först boken publicerades så Ayatollahna i Iran blev arga, eftersom boken innehåller text mot Islam. Tyvärr utfärdade Ayatollah Khomeini en dödsdom mot det Brittiska författaren av denna bok Salman Rushdie, men Khomeini dog själv av hjärtinfarkt därefter. Jag tycker att man ska försvara demokratin och eftersom det är en självklarhet att man får skriva, publicera, sälja, köpa och äga och läsa denna bok så har jag köpt och nu läser det även av politiskt skäl, nämligen för att demonstrera mot Ayatollahna och att visa att de bestämmer inget för oss! Jag tycker att alla ska köpa och läsa denna bok och försvara det fria orden! Ägandet av denna bok i Iran har dödstraff i Iran och jag tycker just därför ska man köpa och läsa denna bok, nämligen för att protestera emot Ayatollahna. Boken är även översätt till persiska men jag föredrar att läsa boken i sin original format nämligen på engelska.

   Lysande!

   Jag tycker den här boken är en av de bästa böckerna jag läst! Hur Salman väver samman historierna i boken är helt genialt, man ser parallellerna även då det är tidsskillnader på flera hundra år, men utan att någonsin bli skriven på näsan. Jag älskar den religösa vinklingen i boken som inte är föreläsande eller elitistisk utan fri för tolkning och man kan misstro det om man vill. Det här är den enda av Salmans böcker jag läst och jag har inte läst något liknande. Alla borde läsa den här boken. För den ÄR bättre än klassiker som "sagan om ringen" triologin.

   Eastern and western identites

   Rushdie's masterpiece touches on the conflicts of living in two different worlds. The protagonist and the antagonist of the book are used to show how we all have to deal with identity conflicts. Rushdie succeeds to show how crossing frontiers from east to west intensifies this conflict: Rushdie says in Imaginary Homelands, "We all cross frontiers;in that sense, we are all migrants peoples."(Imaginary Homelands, 279). I really enjoyed The Satanic Verses and I recommend Rushdie's Imaginary Homelands as well.
