Dr. Mortimer J. Adler was Chairman of the Board of the Encyclopedia Britannica, Director of the Institute for Philosophical Research, Honorary Trustee of the Aspen Institute, and authored more than fifty books. He died in 2001.Dr. Charles Van Doren earned advanced degrees in both literature and mathematics from Columbia University, where he later taught English and was the Assistant Director of the Institute for Philosophical Research. He also worked for Encyclopedia Britannica in Chicago.

    I stora drag handlar boken kring hur man läser bok. Det kanske låter simpelt, men det bokens fokus ligger på analytiskt läsande - hur man ser strukturen, åsikter och argument. Författarna presenterar ett antal regler för att uppnå detta . Nyckelordet är förståelse. Författarna menar att om man vill tillgodogöra sig en bra bok måste man läsa grundligt. Att vara beläst handlar inte om att läsa så många böcker som möjligt, utan om att läsa en bok bra. Boken vänder sig i första hand till läsandet av "expository works" , men beskriver även hur man kan överföra det till andra sorters litteratur. Författarna tar även upp hur man ger ett verk kritik och hur man använder referenser och kommentarer. För att se innehållet och utförligare recensioner, vill jag rekommendera Amazons hemsida. I bokens avslutande kapitel finns ett förslag på drygt 100 författare som skrivit verkligt bra böcker. Författarna använder även litterära verk inbakade i texten för att illustrera sina metoder. Boken rekommenderas varmt.
