James Hogg was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. He is best known for his novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Kirsteen McCue is Professor of Scottish Literature and Song Culture at the University of Glasgow. She has already produced a number of scholarly editions: of the songs of James Hogg (vols. 28 & 29 of the Collected Works of James Hogg for EUP, 2014), prose works by Anne Grant of Laggan and Isabella Spence (Women’s Travel Writing in Scotland with Pam Perkins, 2016) and Robert Burns’s songs for George Thomson (vol.4 of the new Oxford Works of Robert Burns, 2021).
