    Beskrivning

As a case study of foreign policy formation and implementation, this text is intended to add to our understanding of the course and conduct of the Second World War, and the dynamics of contemporary international relations. Most important, this book shows wartime Anglo-French relations in a new light by analyzing primarily British policy towards the French African Empire between the defeat of France in June 1940 and the Allied invasion of Morocco and Algeria in November 1942. Contents: include: La Guerre A Outrance?; Free French Africa; Full Circle: French North Africa, October 1940-March 1941; The Moroccan Question; Stemming the Tide; The Madagascar Compromise; Prelude to "Torch".

...a useful contribution to an aspect of the early years of the war which figured prominently in British strategic planning and diplomatic calculations, and which until now has been largely ignored by scholars. Albion ...eminently readable and...many useful insights into the minds of British policy-makers...Professor Dinan's book should...provide much of value. The Journal Of Imperial and Commonwealth History ...carefully researched and written...for professional historians and advanced students. History ...a well-researched and attractively written book. The International History Review ...a cogent and comprehensive study...a thoroughly professional work of historical scholarship. It also represents a most promising authorial debut for this young scholar. -- Denis Smyth, Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada The International History Review ...a solid work, closely based on archive sources...interesting, perceptive and valuable to specialists both for its detail and for its general argument...
