His previous books include Eighteenth-Century German Prose (1992), The Faces of Physiognomy (1993), Noble Lies, Slant Truths, Necessary Angels: Aspects of Fictionality in the Novels of Christoph Martin Wieland (1997), and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice: A Novella and Its Critics (2003).
