Translating Latin and Greek

Everyone working with Latin and Greek texts shares a Special Relationship with translation: any access to texts written in those 'dead' languages is by default via translation only. Classicists live in what may be called the 'translation condition'-they have to translate. Translation in Classics, however, though absolutely fundamental, remains insufficiently considered or discussed. This ground-breaking volume is the first to provide a systematic and theoretically sophisticated treatment of translating these classical languages. Thoroughly informed by Translation Studies and cognate disciplines, it is organized in four distinct yet inter-connected parts: translation practices, select histories of translation, ten first-hand accounts by published Classicist-translators and a section devoted entirely to translation pedagogy. All of this is accompanied by an Introduction, a Glossary and an Annotated General Bibliography. The chief goal of this Critical Guide is to create a 'topography of translation' within the discipline of Classics and beyond.
