Beskrivning
This book sets out an integrated, interactional usage-based approach to L2 studies as a new epistemological contribution to SLA research, drawing on a three-year case study to enhance our understanding of the relationship between locally accomplished actions and long-term L2 learning. The volume is the first of its kind to merge usage-based SLA, conversation analytic SLA (CA-SLA), and interactional linguistics in one framework, taking its point of departure from the idea that second languages are key to community participation and L2 learning is the contextualized biographical discovery of semiotic resources to accomplish social action. That is, users’ everyday interactions in their lifeworlds mutually inform how they navigate language use over time. The authors argue that this approach, when applied to longitudinal studies of L2 learners in the wild, can better shed light on how learning is done, how interactional competence develops, how linguistic resources emerge, and how the accomplishment of social actions co-evolve with the emergence of linguistic resources.Outlining an innovative epistemological framework within SLA, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in second language acquisition, second language education, and applied linguistics.
