How to Find Gold

Viviane Schwarz is the author-illustrator of the highly acclaimed picture books There Are Cats in this Book and There Are No Cats in this Book, both of which were shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal (2009, 2012); Is There a Dog in This Book? and Counting with Tiny Cat. The Adventures of a Nose was shortlisted for the V&A illustration Award and her debut graphic novel The Sleepwalkers was nominated for the British Comics Awards. There’s nothing like a treasure hunt to get the imaginative juices flowing, as Anna and Crocodile find out when they hunt for gold in this beguiling tale by Schwarz (“There Are Cats in This Book”). But, for one thing, as Crocodile reports, finding it is “dangerous and difficult.” For another, Anna’s not even sure what gold is. As Crocodile tries to explain it and the two make maps and do an undersea dive, the banter is as cleverly constructed as Schwarz’s layered, explosively colorful illustrations.
