The beloved poet Maya Angelou was, among other things, a novelist, playwright, actress, dancer, and civil rights activist. She was a professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University, Winston, North Carolina. Angelou died in 2014 at the age of 86.  Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York, of Haitian and Puerto Rican parents.
