    En summarisk men grundlig vandring genom historien med demokratibegreppets utveckling i centrum. Avslutningsvis diskuteras vår tids kultur med internationella motsättningar och möjligheterna att leva vidare i en värld i relativ fred. Historiskt har svåra motsättningarna ändat i, alltmer, förödande krig. De tekniska möjligheterna att ödelägga och att skada varandra har aldrig varit större än nu. Kommer detta kunna förhindra ett nästa storkrig? Det lär inte koras någon vinnare - i bästa fall en förlorad segrare.

Will Durant (1885-1981) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1968) and the Medal of Freedom (1977). He spent more than fifty years writing his critically acclaimed THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION (the later volumes written in conjunction with his wife, Ariel). His book THE STORY OF PHILOSOPHY is credited with introducing more people to the subject of philosophy than any other work.
