This work encapsulates the essential developments in this field into a single resource, as well as to set an agenda for further development in the field. This brief focuses on the demand flexibility in supply chains with fragmented results distributed throughout the literature. These results have strong implications for managing real-world complex operations planning problems.This book exploits dimensions of demand flexibility in supply chains and characterizes the best fit between demand properties and operations capabilities and constraints. The origins and seminal works are traced in integrated demand and operations planning and an in-depth documentation is provided for the current state of the art. Systems with inherent costs and constraints that must respond to some set of demands at a minimum cost are examined. Crucial unanswered questions are explored and the high-value research directions are highlighted for both practice and for the development of new and interesting optimization models and algorithms.

Joseph Geunes is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. His research focuses on applying operations research techniques to large-scale production and logistics planning problems. Professor Geunes serves as Co-Director of the Supply Chain And Logistics Engineering (SCALE) Research Center and as Director of the Outreach Engineering Management professional Master's Degree program at the University of Florida. He has co-authored more than 35 peer-reviewed journal articles, which have appeared in journals such as Operations Research, Mathematical Programming, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, IIE Transactions, and Naval Research Logistics. He also serves as an Associate Editor for OMEGA, Computers & IE, Decision Sciences, and the Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization, and is on the editorial boards of Production and Operations Management and the International Journal of Inventory Research. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. and Florida Departments of Transportation, the U.S. Navy, Merck & Co., and Motorola. Professor Geunes received a Ph.D. (1999) and MBA (1993) from Penn State University, as well as a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1990) from Drexel University.
