Correspondence of Ezra Pound and the Frobenius Institute, 1930-1959

Erik Tonning is Professor of English at NLA University College, Norway, and Professor II of British Literature and Culture at the University of Bergen, Norway. He is co-editor of the Modernist Archives series and the Historicizing Modernism series, both published by Bloomsbury. He is the author of Samuel Beckett’s Abstract Drama and Modernism and Christianity, as well as the editor of a number of volumes on modernism.

Tonning’s impressive volume fills a heretofore glaring gap in assessing the place of Frobenius in Pound’s expansive use of him in his poetry and prose. While it reminds readers of Pound’s egregious antisemitic prejudice throughout, The Correspondence balances firsthand material and incisive criticism in a comprehensive bibliographic context that make it the definitive work on this essential component of Pound.
