Mary P. Ryan is a noted historian who has won the Bancroft Prize and the Berkshire Prize. She is the author of several books, including Cradle of the Middle Class: The Family in Oneida County, New York, 1790–1865; Civic Wars: Democracy and Public Life in the American City during the Nineteenth Century; and Mysteries of Sex: Tracing Women and Men through American History. She is an emeritus professor of history at John Hopkins University and the University of California, Berkeley.
