Light: The Extraordinary Energy That Illuminates Our World

Dr Jess Wade is an excitable scientist with an enthusiasm for equality. By day, she works in the incredible laboratories of Imperial College London, where she creates new materials to use in electronic devices. She spends her evenings trying to make science a more equal and fair place, celebrating the phenomenal contributions of researchers who are all-too-often overlooked. Jess is well known for her work editing Wikipedia, where she has been writing the biographies of women and people of colour every day since the beginning of 2018.

The language is clear, the sentences are simple, and there is a flow to the narrative that makes up for the lack of a story. Wade makes the science relatable for children by bringing in real-world examples . . . and throughout, Sanfelippo’s gorgeous illustrations fill the pages . . . I think it’s safe to say that Wade can add another success to her list of many accomplishments. Light is beautiful and educational, and personally, I wouldn’t hesitate to give it as gift or keep it at the front of the bookshelf.
