Viviane Schwarz is the author-illustrator of the highly acclaimed picture books There Are Cats in this Book and There Are No Cats in this Book, both of which have been shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Viviane has also illustrated Ergo and I Am Henry Finch, written by Alexis Deacon. Her own author-illustrated picture books include Sometimes You Find a Dragon. He has won the Kate Greenaway Medal three times – for Pirate Diary, Gulliver's Travels and The Sleeper and the Spindle. Chris is a political cartoonist for the Observer, and his author-illustrated work includes the highly-acclaimed Ottoline and Goth Girl titles. Nothing, though, felt as original or resonant as I Will Haunt This, by Viviane Schwarz and illustrated by The Observer’s political cartoonist Chris Riddell (Walker Books, £8.99, published 24 September). The story centres on a ghost who finds itself without anything to haunt. In its search for something new, it makes an unlikely friend in a little girl who that day has struggled to draw something and, in frustration, has scratched and scribbled it out. This is a tender tale of how items can carry meaning and importance, and of appreciating the things we make, be it through creative pursuits or by spending time with one another.
