Richard Sakwa is Professor of Russian and European Politics and Head of the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. He is author of Putin and the Oligarch: The Khodorkovsky-Yukos Affair (I.B.Tauris); The Crisis of Russian Democracy; Putin: Russia's Choice and Russian Politics and Society.

   Frontline Ukraina

   Frontline Ukraina är en bok som sätter krisen i Ukraina i ett historiskt perspektiv. Sakwa berör den historiska utvecklingen och dagens situation med mäktiga oligarker som styr. Han berör särskilt hur oligarkerna samlat rikedomar och makt. Oligarkernas makt har succesivt ökat i Ukraina och många utövar sitt inflytande även i Väst. Den ekonomiska utvecklingen för folket har varit negativ. USA och Nato har hela tiden strävat efter att använda Ukraina för att pressa/dominera Ryssland. Detta har skett genom oranga revolutionen och genom övertagandet av Maidanprotesterna. Natoutvidgningen har skapat en spänd situation. EU avtalet var ett avtal som främst avsåg till att fjärma Ukraina från Ryssland och få in Ukraina i den Europeiska säkerhetsorganisationen med ett Ukrainskt Natomedlemskap som mål. Någon hänsyn till de problem som avtalet innebar för näraliggande länder togs inte. Det var närmast ett avtal som ensidigt avsåg att utvidga EUs marknad. USA och EU har satsat stora belopp på att styra utvecklingen i Ukraina. Boken behandlar utförligt hur USA/Nato har arbetat mot en fredlig lösning för Ukraina och istället arbetat för konfrontation med Ryssland. Att utveckla och demokratisera Ukraina har inte varit på agendan för väst. Boken är en utmärkt analys av vad som hänt och av de olika intressenter som agerar i Ukraina. Boken borde läsas av politiker, de som gör analyser, journalister m fl. Om boken läses av fler borde den ensidiga bild vi får via media bli mer mångsidig och analytisk.
