BOOKLIST (American Library Assoc)In this easily approachable guide, Cross breaks down the techniques needed to create beautiful pieces of embroidery. She begins by listing the necessary equipment and types of projects and the required prep work, then she explains the most common stitches and how to execute them. Step-by-step pictures help readers visualize how each piece progresses so they aren't left wondering how to get from point A to point Z; Cross fills in the gaps and seems to anticipate all questions that might arise. Then readers are guided through projects of varying difficulty utilizing the different stitching and techniques, again with the easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to walk them through each part. The Beginner's Guide to Embroidery could be a gateway to making this classic craft accessible to anyone interested in learning it, with Cross striking a conversational tone that makes it feel like a friend is walking you through the process over lunch. Her thorough explanations will help newbies avoid the fish-out-of-water feeling of picking up a complex craft. — Carrie Rasak
