MARK PEEL was educated at Harrow and read History at the University of Edinburgh. He went on to teach History and Politics at Fettes College for more than 20 years. A veteran biographer, he has written acclaimed lives of figures from sport and politics, including Shirley Williams and leading cricketers, and his first book won the Cricket Society Literary Award.

The definitive biography of Donald Dewar… it will stand the test of time. Some years ago I was was asked by Wendy Alexander to contribute to a book of essays on Donald Dewar, her one-time colleague and mentor. When published in 2005, the volume was well received but it was not a substitute for a full scale rounded biography. It took over two decades for that to appear. Mark Peel’s book was worth waiting for. It is thoroughly grounded on research on an array of sources, sound in judgement and a pleasure to read.
