Hidden Flame

Born in India at the end of empire and marked early by the loss of a father killed in action, Robin Brooke-Smith’s journey unfolds across continents and crises – from East Africa to the Himalayas, and ultimately to the volatile Pakistan–Afghan frontier. There, as Principal of a historic Mission College in Peshawar, he finds himself with a ringside seat to the rise of Al Qaeda in the wild surrounding hills leading up to 9/11. But beneath the geopolitical drama lies a quieter, deeper story: a solitary childhood encounter with the divine that becomes the compass for a life lived through unchosen paths. As the modern world enters an age of cultural fragmentation and post-truth confusion, The Hidden Flame explores what is lost when a civilisation forgets its foundations – and what might yet be found. Part memoir, part spiritual odyssey, and part meditation on a world in upheaval, this is the story of a man navigating the dragons of modernity in search of wisdom, meaning, and the pearl of great price. It is a subtle, embodied account of faith tested on the faultlines of global upheaval.
