A careful read of this series is virtually 'compulsory' for all candidates for the intercollegiate final FRCS examination in general surgery. There is no doubt that it admirably fulfills its ambition in this respect. Indeed candidates would be well advised to ensure that they have access to a copy. It is well written and could be regarded as relatively light reading later in the evening or perhaps whilst waiting for a slot in the operating theatre.
