Sunil Gupta: Life with a Camera, 1970 – Now, traces five decades of Sunil Gupta’s (b. 1953, India) pioneering contribution to photography and activism. Intimate and subversive, Gupta’s photography has been instrumental in documenting the fight for queer rights internationally, particularly in India, the UK and United States, laying bare the tensions between tradition and modernity, and public and private spheres.Featuring over 100 images in colour and black and white, accompanied by a selection of Gupta’s writings from the 1980s to the present. Essays by Natasha Bissonauth, Theo Gordon, Tausif Noor, Gregory Salter and Gayatri Sinha offer fresh perspectives on Gupta’s practice, situating it within global, queer and postcolonial histories, and contributing to ongoing debates around photography as both an art form and an agent of change.The book accompanies a major exhibition of Gupta’s work opening in September 2026 at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, before touring to Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2027) and Leeds Art Gallery (2028).

Sunil Gupta (b. 1953 New Delhi, India) is an artist and activist. After moving to Canada as a teenager in the late 1960s, Gupta took up photography, which he studied at the New York school in 1976. He went on to receive: a Diploma from West Surrey College of Art & Design, Farnham, Surrey, UK (1981); an MA from Royal College of Art, London, UK (1983); and a PhD from the University of Westminster, London, UK (2019) with a thesis titled "Queer Migrations." Gupta's practice explores his experience as a queer Indian man and that of his circle and surroundings.Guy Haywood is curator of exhibitions at Kettle's Yard.Andrew Nairne OBE is the Director of Kettle's Yard, the University of Cambridge's modern and contemporary art gallery.Dr. Natasha Bissonauth is Assistant Professor of Art History in the Faculty of Culture and Community at the art and design school, Emily Carr University.Theo Gordon is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.Tausif Noor is a critic, curator, and PhD candidate in global modern art at the University of California, Berkeley.Gregory Salter is Associate Professor In History Of Art at the University of Birmingham.Gayatri Sinha is an art critic and curator based in New Delhi whose primary areas of enquiry are around the structures of gender and iconography, media, economics and social history.
