Carcass Remover

TheCarcass Removeris a portrait of a man destroyed by war - The Yugoslav Wars. Srebrenica is nevermentioned, yet it may be the unspeakable centre of this man's labyrinthinepattern of stories. A Hungarian from the former Yugoslavia, conscripted tofight for the Serbs, he now haunts the borders of Europe: a traumatized, nameless survivor with chronic digestive issues, his sole virtue the desire toexplain himself. Butwho is out there to hear his story? In a sense the reader is the ideal listenerto this man's desperate, sometimes comic, uncertain monologue - his one hope ofa cure, or absolution. This fiercely beautiful anti-war novel not onlycelebrates the defiance of memory in the face of atrocity but asks what role weas witnesses might play in helping to put a stop to it.
