Kalevala

Assembled from centuries of oral folk poetry, The Kalevala gave Finland its national epic - a sweeping saga of shamans, sky-forged treasures, doomed love, and a magic mill that grinds out fortune itself. Lonnrot's 19th-century compilation preserved an oral tradition on the edge of vanishing and, in doing so, helped ignite a national cultural awakening; its rhythms would later echo through Tolkien and Sibelius alike. A myth cycle as strange and haunting as anything in world literature.
