This book introduces advanced theories, models, and practices on the resilience of oil and gas infrastructures to support the resilience management of critical infrastructures, overcoming the limitations of safety management of critical infrastructures. Different disruptions (e.g., unintentional disruptions, intentional disruptions, natural disasters) and the performance of critical infrastructures exposed to different disruptions are considered. Besides theories and models, this book provides resilience assessment practices for different oil and gas infrastructures including natural gas pipelines, oil pipelines, submarine pipelines, railway oil transportation systems, submarine pipelines, LNG shipping systems, oil terminals, and LNG terminals. Besides fossil energies, the resilience assessment of renewable energy infrastructures such as hydrogen refueling stations is also introduced in this study. As a result, this study can play an important role in the development of resilience assessment research, inspire new researchers, and support resilience assessment and management practices for critical infrastructures.

Chao Chen is a Professor at Southwest Petroleum University. He got a PhD degree in Safety Science at Delft University of Technology in 2021 in the Netherlands, Master degree of Science (MSc) in Safety Engineering of Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation in 2017, Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) in Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation. In 2022, he was appointed as a professor in the domain of safety and resilience of oil and gas infrastructures at Petroleum Engineering School, Southwest Petroleum University. His research focuses on safety and resilience issues related to oil and gas infrastructures such as pipelines, oil storage tank farms, hydrogen refueling stations. His contributions in safety and resilience domain include resilience assessment and management, dynamic risk assessment, emergency response, safety management, security management and safety economics. He has led several projects related to safety and resilience issues from National Natural Science Foundation of China, Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Plan, and Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF). He has published more than 30 research papers in international journals such as Reliability Engineering and System Safety, Safety Science, Journal of Loss Prevention In the Process Industries. Besides, He also published 6 monographs such as the book “Integrated Safety and Security Management to Tackle Domino Effects” published by SPRINGER NATURE. Genserik L.L. Reniers
