This volume brings together academics and practitioners to discuss the nexus between populism and global politics. While the rise of populist domestic politics has been the subject of significant discussion, the international links and networks of populism receives much less attention. In today’s globalised world, however, populism, cannot be fully understood without exploring its international and transational dimensions. First, it is clear populist movements and leaders identify with each other and often support each other in election campaigns. Second, it is evident that many of the demands voiced by populist parties and leaders have a foreign policy or international component. The book seeks to address this anomaly by exploring such themes as the common language and narratives of populism; the recurrent causes and drivers of populism; the use of case studies to illustrate the populist experience in countries like Brazil, USA, Germany and New Zealand; and the uneasy relationship between populism and the international rules-based order.

Dirk Nabers has held the Chair of International Political Sociology at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel since 2010. He has held visiting professorships in Japan, New Zealand and Estonia. His research focuses on IR theories, sociological theories, political sociology and theories of poststructuralism. His publications include four monographs, numerous edited volumes and over 100 articles, including in leading journals such as Review of International Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, International Studies Perspectives, Critical Studies on Security, New Political Science, Politische Vierteljahresschrift, Politics and International Relations of the Asia-Pacific. Robert G. Patman is one of the University of Otago’s Inaugural Sesquicentennial Distinguished Chairs and a specialist in international relations. He is the Director of the Master of International Studies (MIntSt) programme. He has authored or edited 14 books with a recent one being a co-edited volume titled From Asia-Pacific to Indo-Pacific: Diplomacy in a Contested Region (Palgrave Macmillan 2021). Robert is also an Honorary Professor of the New Zealand Defence Command and Staff College and makes regular contributions to the national and global media on international issues.
