This volume aims to present, for the first time in English or Japanese, a comprehensive analysis of the subfield of Japanese sociohistorical linguistics with contributions from scholars both in and outside of Japan covering a diverse range of subjects including but not limited to historical language variation, dialect genesis, historical contact scenarios and language policy and education.
