Schloss Neuenburg

High above the wine-growing town of Freyburg on the Unstrut River rises Neuenburg Castle, founded around 1090 by the Thuringian count Ludwig the Jumper and sister castle to the Wartburg. As the Landgraves of Thuringia rose to power, Neuenburg became the largest castle of its time and the most important seat of the landgraves. To this day, the double chapel built around 1180, with its remarkable architectural ornamentation, is considered a true gem.
