Love of Life, and Other Stories

Eight Northland stories: a man abandoned by his partner and crawling on a lame ankle across the barrens, a day''s lodging, the white man''s way, the story of Keesh. London had been an oyster pirate, a hobo and a Klondike prospector before he was twenty-four. The title story was read aloud to Lenin on his deathbed, which is the kind of afterlife London would have enjoyed. Fifty-nine plates by painters including Caspar David Friedrich and Winslow Homer carry the northern light and hard pastoral ground these stories walk.
