Star-Rover

A convict in solitary is laced into a canvas jacket as punishment, and learns to leave his body and live other lives - a boy in a wagon-train massacre, a Roman soldier, a castaway on a bare rock in the southern ocean. London wrote it from the accounts of a real prisoner at San Quentin who had survived the jacket, and used the frame to argue against the whole apparatus of punishment. Fifty-eight plates of moonlit docks and quiet interiors by Grimshaw and Hammershøi give the outer darkness and the inner life their proper weather.
