Thrall of Leif the Lucky

A young English thrall in Greenland, Leif Ericson's household, and the voyage west to Vinland five hundred years before Columbus. Liljencrantz was a Chicago writer of Swedish descent who spent her short career on the sagas; she worked from the Norse texts rather than from the Victorian idea of vikings, and the Greenland politics - Christian against heathen in Eric's own hall - are taken from the record. Sixty plates of northern light and coastal life, from Skagen beach scenes to sailing ships off Kronborg, by painters including Michael Ancher and Carl Frederik Sorensen, match the saga's sea-borne world.
