Andreyev wrote it in 1908 after the mass executions that followed the revolution of 1905, and dedicated it to Tolstoy. This edition carries Herman Bernstein''s translation and a gallery of 53 bound plates, among them paintings by Ilya Repin, Boris Kustodiev and Ivan Shishkin.
