Game and the Candle

Two brothers on a California estate find that the family money will run out in six months, and John Allard decides to find a fortune outside the usual law so that his brother can stay at home, respectable, with the women who depend on them. What he finds instead is a prince travelling incognito, a secretary's post at a small European court, a king's death and a regency. Ingram wrote quick romantic adventure and kept it moving. Sixty plates of landscapes and court portraits, from Munch to Winterhalter, carry the story from California light to the painted rooms of Europe.
