This book is set in a world where the creed of grease and lubricity has become dominant, and traditional organized religions have become commercialized entities. The narrative focuses on Stella Pontifex, a historian who investigates the cosmic significance of grease, after she experiences a series of prophetic dreams involving the legendary grease prophet, Frank. Stella collaborates with her boyfriend, an industrial chemist working on grease attenuation, to develop a technique that allows her to interrogate historical grease samples and access subtle, otherworldly realms, including various versions of Heaven and Hell. Ultimately, Stella discovers that grease is the universe's memory and lubricant, and that attenuation, or refining it, is key to spiritual understanding.
