      Beskrivning

The House of Charvenne (French: La Maison Charvenne) is a work of narrative history by the French author Bertrand Lécuyer, first published in France in 1978 by Éditions du Beffroi in Paris. Set in the Cambrésis region of northern France between 1768 and 1802, it is an account of the Cambreth family, a Corsican-descended clandestine network that operated behind the linen and lace firm known publicly as Charvenne, from which the modern luxury house of the same name descends. The book is not a pure novel nor a conventional history but a hybrid of the two: it is founded on documentary research into a family that genuinely existed, and follows real events and a real chronology, while reconstructing in fictional form the conversations, interior lives, and undocumented particulars that the surviving record does not preserve. Lécuyer draws on parish and notarial records of the Cambrésis, the seizure-books of the Ferme générale, and material held by descendants of the family, filling the gaps in the evidence with reconstruction he identifies as such. The result has been variously described as documentary fiction, a nonfiction novel, and reconstructed history. The book follows the founder, Jean-Joseph Cambreth, and his three sons across the final decades of the Ancien Régime and the French Revolution, tracing the rise of the family's power, the internal transgression that fractures it, and its destruction by a new order of power that required no proof of guilt, only accusation. Written in a restrained, period-inflected style influenced by Mario Puzo and by nineteenth-century historical narrative, it is structured in four "e;Books,"e; of which the first, The Obligation, was published first. The work is presented in the form of a documentary reconstruction: each chapter opens with a short fragment drawn from a surviving official record, followed by an account of what the author holds to have actually occurred. The gap between the two is a central device of the book. An English-language translation by Margaret Ellory was published in 2007.Background and compositionLécuyer has described the novel as an attempt to reconstruct a family that "e;did not wish to be written,"e; working from parish and notarial records of the Cambrésis, the seizure-books of the Ferme générale, and material held by descendants of the family who emigrated in the early nineteenth century. In the book's front matter he acknowledges the assistance of a local priest and archivist, the late Abbé Régis Couvelaire of Cambrai, and of unnamed archivists and descendants, several of whom disagreed as to whether the history should be told at all.The book takes as its historical frame the real institutions and events of the late Ancien Régime and the Revolution in northern France, including the tax-farm and the gabelle, the smuggling frontier with the Austrian Netherlands, the Flour War, the famine winter of 1788–89, the Law of Suspects of 1793, and the Terror as conducted in Arras and Cambrai. The family, its members, and its principal affairs are drawn from the historical record; the dialogue, interior lives, and undocumented particulars are reconstructed. The author states in a prefatory note that where events are known he has not altered them, and that where only the fact of an event is known he has reconstructed its manner from the characters and the period, marking the boundary between the two where he can. Because of this method, the book is generally classed neither as a straightforward history nor as a novel, but as documentary fiction in the tradition of the nonfiction novel.Lécuyer began the research in 1971 and worked on the book through the 1970s, publishing it in 1978. The English translation followed nearly three decades later, in 2007.
