Beskrivning

A case for Re-allocation of Irrigation WaterWater allocation means formal and informal system that determines who is able to use water resources, when, where and how much. The irrigation systems designed in the whole world have become too old with respect to water distribution i.e., water sharing among the stakeholders and the necessary knowledge and tools of calculation in this regard has increased many times than at the time of irrigation system designing. Moreover, groundwater use has become very important in irrigation and depth to groundwater has also variably increased many times, especially in cities which mainly depend on groundwater for their water supply. Also, the groundwater is a by-product of surface water supply including irrigation and rainfall. Therefore, re-allocation of irrigation water is necessary now. This book is particularly for researchers, operators, policy makers, consultants and students. It demonstrates re-allocation application for Bari Doab in Pakistan and it also presents the need for improvement in irrigation water allocations amongst canals in Lower Indus. It demonstrates that Rice Command takes more water than required resulting in waterlogging and emphasis for re-allocation for its solution along with drainage. Overall the book emphasizes on required re-allocation for improved water governance for agriculture and other uses, particularly domestic uses have become necessary to fulfill with passage of time due to urbanization. Presently, in many cases over the world, formal water re-allocation is not a topic of discussion and practices are accepted as they are, with no plans to improve. Moreover shape files of irrigation channels, their command areas, salinity measured in 1981and 2002-04, texture of the soils lying on Pakistani side of IBIS and shape files pertaining to Indian boundary of the IBIS and rectified jpg of canal system in India, along with rivers and boundary of Indus Basin are shared herewith in zipped folders in the form of link at the end of page 3 in chapter 1.
