Satan's Best Friends-An Investigative Memoir of the Process Church, the Manson Myth, and America's Strangest Animal Sanctuary

In 1966, two ex-Scientologists in London started a religion with four gods, black robes, and a pack of German shepherds. Fifty years later, the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in America sits on land tied to that story, and almost none of its sponsors know it.Satan's Best Friends traces the Process Church of the Final Judgment from a London auditing room to a Mexican salt mine, from a slick magazine that landed Mick Jagger and an interview with Charles Manson to the 1974 coup that tore the group apart. It separates what the Process actually taught from what the Manson panic said it did. Then it follows the trail to Kanab, Utah, and to the question that stalks the whole book: what became of Robert de Grimston, the co-founder whose half of the story simply stops?Part investigative history, part road trip, part search for a missing man, this is a darkly funny and carefully sourced look at how a doomsday sect became a dog shelter.
