Josephine Gates Kelly

Josephine Gates Kelly was the granddaughter of Dakota Chief Matho Numpa, or Two Bears. By working in a family store, becoming Deputy County Auditor, and attending national conferences, Gates Kelly represented her people from a political position. She became the first woman elected as Tribal Chairperson for any Native government in 1946.
