In an alternate 1603, where different nations and empires rose to power, Retra lies upon the precipice of ruin. Natural disasters and civil strife have cast the theocratic nation into a dark age, leaving its people to suffer as their leaders squabble over petty fortunes. Amidst it all lies Robin Rivera, a young novice of the Clergy of the Divine Sun. Haunted by the failures of the Divine Council and the personal loss she suffered, Robin is determined to prove herself worthy of ascendance to the highest ranks of the Clergy and make the fundamental changes needed to save her nation.

Yet there are dark forces with their own twisted desires for Retra, who stand in the way of its holy salvation. The notorious Rebellion remains at large, led by the traitor Judith Addington, murdering knights and clergymen wherever they roam. The Divine Council deliberates endlessly, while the Brotherhood has all but established full military order. Ambitions spark, rival factions clash, and sin touches even the most devoted of holy men. Thrown into a world rife with tragedy and political conspiracy, Robin discovers that when the fate of an entire country is at stake, those who crave power will stop at nothing until they have achieved it.
