The searches by European Union major states for ''joined up'' approaches to inner city regeneration are examined thematically through a focus on policy evolution since the mid-1970s. Key issues addressed include the physical, social, employment, and urban security agenda. The product of long-term research, drawing on extensive qualitative and quantitative sources at national level, backed by in-depth case study investigation of five large cities, the book assesses how contemporary urban rejuvenation is being regulated, including the increasing contribution of the European Union.

This is a resource book for social scientists engaged in cross-national comparative research. It critically examines the methodological and managerial issues which arise from such work, with a particular focus on the economic and social policy agenda of the European Union. Experts from across Europe and from different disciplinary backgrounds draw upon their own experience of conducting cross-national comparisons to offer well-informed guidance on how to overcome the pitfalls and problems they have encountered.

Doktorsavhandling i historia. The focus of this doctoral dissertation is the phenomenon of the so-called original accumulation. The presentation is integrated in a study of a local material: The farm Mången and the Finnish family, who lived there between about 1650 and 1800. Through detailed investigations of demographic, fiscal, and court materials, the families are reconstructed as well as their production and value systems. In 1686 Mången and the other Finn-farms in the Hällefors-district were granted by the crown as a fiefdom to the Hällefors silverwork. The idea of a private proprietary right, a reception from the Roman law and confirmed by law in Sweden 1789, answered to the endeavours to accumulate ground properties. The driving force behind this process was the aspiration of the feudal lords to seize the whole surplus product. As relatively independent agrarian producers the Finn-peasants in Mången could save part of their surplus product for themselves. Key words: Migration, burn-beating, charcoal-burning, inventories, Mosaic law, catechetical register När finntorparen Pål Hindersson den 28 maj 1790 av Hällefors bergstingsrätt dömdes att ta lösen för sitt torp i Mången och därmed blev en jordlös proletär, berodde det inte på att Mångens jord inte längre förmådde föda honom och hans familj. Medan de första torparna i Mången hade mindre än ett tunnland odlad jord till sitt förfogande, hade Pål Hindersson, när han brukade hela den östra hemmansdelen, tio gånger så mycket. När de första åborna fick nöja sig med åtta lass hö, kunde Pål Hindersson enbart på sina ängsbärgningar öster om sjön skörda 20 lass. Liksom fallet var för hans svärfar före honom, kunde torpet, åtminstone normala år, ge honom en knapp bärgning. Något behov av extra arbetstillfällen vid bruken för att därmed kompensera en alltför svag agrar ekonomi hade han knappast. Det arbete för bruken, som han trots det utförde, bidrog istället till att undergräva hans ekonomi - att göra honom fattigare. Varför arbetade han likafullt åt bruken? Han gjorde det underkastad ett dubbelt tvång. Dels var han förhindrad att fritt använda skogen för svedjebruk. Därför kunde, vissa år i synnerhet, överlevnadsmarginalen bli alltför smal, så att han måste lita till uttag från bruksmagasinet. Dels arbetade han för Hälleforsverket på grund av ett yttre tvång, grundat i 1686 års donationsbrev. Pål Hindersson och hans familjs fattigdom före proletariseringen var inte en fattigdom, som med naturnödvändighet hade drabbat dem, eller som de själva var skulden till. Den var inte heller orsaken till deras proletarisering. Både fattigdom och proletarisering påtvingades dem av den härskande klassen.
