What is the state of philosophy today, and what might it become tomorrow? With What Philosophy is For, Michael Hampe answers these questions by exploring the relationships among philosophy, education, science, and narrative, developing a Socratically inspired critique of philosophical doctrines. Philosophers have generally thought that their distinctive commitment to critical reflection entailed the development of systematic theories that lay out the basic structures of human experience, in order to teach the rest of humanity how to conceive more truly our place in the world. Hampe argues against this line of thinking, positing that the world consists fundamentally of individual things whose nature can never fully be captured by general concepts. As a result, philosophy should strive to challenge the false authority by which established patterns of thought and feeling hold us captive, enable the creative imagination to develop new forms of self-understanding, and thereby restore a sense of individual possibilities that would bring philosophy closer to the practices of literature and the arts. What Philosophy is For is simultaneously an introduction, a critique, and a call to action. Hampe shows how and why philosophy became what it is today, and, crucially, shows what it could be once more, if it would only turn its back on its pretensions to dogma: a privileged space for reflecting on the human condition.

This “scientific” approach to philosophy, Hampe argues, is too one-sided. In this magnum opus of an essay, Hampe aims to rescue philosophy from its current narrow claims of doctrine and to remind us what it is really for—to productively disillusion us into clearer thinking. Hampe takes us through twenty-five hundred years of intellectual history, starting with Socrates. That archetype of the philosophical teacher did not develop strict doctrines and rules, but rather criticized and refuted doctrines. With the Socratic method, we see the power of narration at work. Narrative and analytical disillusionment, Hampe argues, are the most helpful long-term enterprises of thought, the ones most worth preserving and developing again. What Philosophy Is For is simultaneously an introduction, a critique, and a call to action. Metaphor theory has shifted from asking whether metaphor is 'conceptual' or 'linguistic' to debating whether it is 'embodied' or 'discursive'. Although recent work in the social and cognitive sciences has yielded clear opportunities to resolve that dispute, the divide between discourse- and cognition-oriented approaches has remained. To unite the field, this book brings together leading metaphor researchers from a number of disciplines. It collects major arguments and presents a wide variety of empirical evidence, placing special emphasis on the embodiment and socio-cultural embeddedness of cognition, as well as the multi-modal and social-interactive nature of communication. It shows that metaphor theory can only profit from an approach that takes multiple perspectives into consideration and tries to account for findings yielded by multiple methodologies. By doing so, it works towards a dynamic, multi-dimensional, socio-cognitive model of metaphor that goes beyond what research traditions have separately achieved.

Nearly 100 German military edged weapons are presented in this sumptuously photographed volume featuring information about their owners. Spanning nearly two hundred years, Legacies in Steel is an in-depth photographic study of historical edged weapons from the German military. The elegant details of each selection are displayed in close-up detail. Many of these weapons belonged to nobility, aristocrats, high-ranking military personnel as well as soldiers and seamen. Where possible, the careers and exploits of these former owners are highlighted, bringing both personal and historical context to these beautifully crafted artifacts. By the 19th century, swords and daggers were no longer effective fighting weapons, but they maintained their popularity in Western Europe as uniform regalia. They were carried as a symbol of authority, achievement, and most importantly, honor. These weapons were produced with great skill and at high cost, requiring the skill of specialized artisans, often using precious metals and ivory, elaborate hand engraving and chiseling. Blades were fabricated of the highest quality Solingen steel. Folded steel Damascus blades were also painstakingly produced. Many examples are unique and border on singular works of art.
