The play offers space for various interpretations and especially the character Hippolytus is argued to appear as rather strange, and less clear than e.g. the character Phaedra (cf. Mills, Euripides 95). This paper aims to examine Euripides play and find out in how far Hippolytus may function as a male Amazon in the play, and how he therewith provides a negative role model for Athenianmen.1 At first, Apollodorus and Euripides account of the Hippolytus/Theseus myth will be discussed and then the character Hippolytus will be compared to Amazons such as the Lemnianwomen and the women of the Sauromatae. After that it will be shown how Hippolytus'inappropriate behavior does not only seal his own fate, but also affects the other characters livesand leads to the disruption of their oikos. Finally, it will be revealed in how far the Hippolytus in Euripides play might have been a character that teaches Athenian men to stick to their society s rules.

Whereas Irving's prior work, the History of New York (1809) is written in a neoclassical1 tone right in the sense the Age of Reason and Enlightenment, "e;The Sketch Book [...], showed that Irving had gradually become a romanticist"e; (cf. Romanticism, a reaction against neoclassicism, stressed strong emotion, imagination, freedom from classical correctness in art forms, and rebellion against social conventions"e;2. The goal of this paper is to examine and explain the major romantic elements in Washington Irving s Rip Van Winkle . Therefore, at first the developments and ways of thinking during the Romantic period will be described, and briefly contrasted with those of the Age of Reason and Enlightenment. Then some information will be given on Irving as a romantic writer and the background of the tale of Rip Van Winkle . After that severalromantic features will be highlighted within short analyses of parts of the tale. Due to the briefness of the paper, the discussed features are restricted to themes such as Truth , Individualism and the depiction of Rip Van Winkle as a common man, as well as the function of nature within the story.

This passage of Walpole s The Castle of Otranto is only one example that shows how the construction of the setting in this novel strongly contributes to the atmosphere of the tale. Also in other passages it becomes obvious that the description of space and landscape conveys a specific meaning within the story, and even prefigures the development throughout the plot. Nunning and Nunning mention: Raume [fungieren] nicht nur als Schauplatze [ ], sondern [erfullen] eine Erzahlfunktion [ ], raumlicheOppositionen [werden] zum Modell fur semantische Oppositionen (cf. 132). Thus, several places and the landscape depicted in the setting may function as semantic carriers (cf. ibid. 133). In this essay it will be examined in how far space is semanticallycharged in Walpole s work, and how this influences the plot, the atmosphere within the story, and the reader s perception of it. In addition, it will be shown that the semantic charging of the settings in The Castle of Otranto is also influenced by its being a Gothic novel. Besides Antoinette and her husband as narrators Rhys also mentions another I that talks in the novel. The author very likely refers to Christophine, Antoinette s black nurse, a Martinique obeah woman who provides a third viewpoint on the action in this multiperspectival narration. However, as multiperspectivity shift[s] the reader s attention from the events recounted on the level of the characters to the subjectivity of each of the presented perspectives (Neumann/Nunning 102), Christophine rather appears as a minor character in Antoinette s and Edward s narration. Still, she seems to be an important and influencing person for Antoinette, and she also is a character Antoinette s husband is very much concerned with and concerned about. In literary criticism there has been a lot of controversy concerning the representation of Christophine in Rhys s novel. The debate circles around the question in how far the character is significant for the action taking place in the narrative and in how far the woman contributes to the meaning of the novel. Whereas Gayatri Spivak sees Christophine as tangential to this narrative (246), Benita Parry regards her as an important source of counter-discourse against the colonial authority (cf. 249). Carine Mardorossian argues that by Antoinette s and her husband s cultural and racial presumptions about Christophine and the other black characters as racial Others the white protagonists are themselves being debunked of their imperialist, stereotypical thinking (cf. 1071-1090). The paper contains analyses of- the novel s multiperspectivity, - the perspectives and attitudes of the narrator-focalisers Antoinette and her husband (Rochester)-Christophine s function for the development in the plot. The results of these analysies will be used to discuss the multiperspectival effects of the novel and to interpret Christophine s role in the narrative by discussing Spivak s, Parry s and Mardorossian s opinions about this character.

They are also known as verb-particle combinations , phrasal verbs , particle verbs (PVs) or separable (complex) verbs (cf. Dehe ibid., cf. Dehe, Jackendoff, McIntyre, Urban 2002:1). VPCs formally consist of a verbal stem and an intransitive prepositional or adverbial element , a so-called particle (Olsen 2000:149). In linguistic research, there is no uncontroversial definition of particles which reliably demarcates them from similar items and has cross-linguistic validity (Dehe et al. 2002:3)[...]According to Dehe (2002), the perhaps most striking property of transitive PV s in English is their appearance in two alternating orders (3) as the English particle can appear on either side of a direct object, unless it is a (non-contrastively accented) pronoun (Dehe et al. 2002:2, cf. Jackendoff ibid.). In the so-called continuous order the particle is adjacent to the verb and precedes the DP-complement as in (1) (Dehe 2002:3-4). In the discontinuous order the particle follows the DP-object (cf. 2) (ibid.). In this order the use of unstressed pronouns is obligatory as illustrated in (3) (ibid.; the following examples are borrowed from Dehe:ibid. as well). (1) He wiped off the table. (2) He wiped the table off. (3) a. He wiped it off. b. *He wiped off it. Concerning the syntactic structure of English VPCs, several questions might be asked:1. How does the syntactic structure of VPCs in English look like?2. How do the alternating word orders come about?3. Which of the word orders is the underlying one?Linguists have developed many different approaches to the syntactic structure of VPCs. This paper is going to focus attention on three different syntactic analyses for English VPCs and attempts to answer the questions posed above. Before presenting the different approaches, some basic characteristics of English VPCs will be introduced. Afterwards, the approaches, namely the Small Clause analysis according to Kayne (1985) and two different complex head analyses by Johnson (1991) and Dehe (2002), will be elucidated and discussed.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Wuppertal, course: Postmodern Neo-Slave Narratives, language: English, abstract: 1 IntroductionIn literary criticism Sherley Anne Williams novel Dessa Rose is often argued to be a story of a woman s triumph in a (white) man s world (Beaulieu 40) and the story of a woman s passage from slavery to freedom (McDowell 147). The novel, as a postmodern neo-slave narrative, stands as a counter-text to master texts and the slave narratives of the 18th and 19th century and presents a series of reversals, contradicting conventional expectations with regard to both race and gender (Beaulieu 31). As McDowell notes, the novel stages the oppositions of slavery and freedom, orality and literacy, fact and fiction [...] in an untidy network of social and material specifities (147). This paper is concerned with the power relations expressed through the relationship between orality and textuality, between the spoken word that enlivens and the written one that captivates and their reversal (Rushdy 2004, 99). As a novel, dealing with oppressive literacy and emancipatory orality Dessa Rose is a novel that directs our attention to the disparity in access to power between those who write master texts and those who produce slave narratives [...] (Rushdy 1993, 366; 1999, 136). In this paper this interesting discrepant relationship is going to be analysed on three different levels. On the level of the story of Dessa Rose it is going to be analysed how the southern white author Adam Nehemiah attempts to assume mastery over the slave woman Dessa and how Dessa refuses to be subject to his efforts of subjugation. It will be shown how Nehemiah reads Dessa according to his own terms and appropriates her (hi)story in his writing. Furthermore, it will be revealed how Dessa seizes the power of her own voice, how she resists being captivated in Nehemiah s book and how she eventually makes use of the written word herself. On the level of narrative transmission, it will be described how this struggle between literacy and orality is mirrored and at the same time deconstructed by the way the narrative is mediated. Finally, it will be discussed how Williams novel reverses the conventions of the traditional slave narrative and thereby hints at the power disparity that the authors of traditional slave narratives faced in their effort to tell their own stories. As such, this paper is concerned with the power relations in literary institutions and the significance of individual writers acts of appropriation (Rushdy 1999, 135).
