Burt Hopkins’ decades-long work exemplifies the richness of the phenomenological movement of thought at its best. Phenomenology Between Philosophy of Mathematics and the History of Philosophy features original essays that reflect on the scope and influence of his philosophy.Hopkins’ contributions shape a unique path at the intersection of the philosophy of mathematics, the interpretation of crucial historical figures in the history of philosophy — notably, Plato, Aristotle, Kant — and the critical reception and assessment of Husserl’s and Heidegger’s phenomenology. This complex, but coherent production indicates the never-ending endeavor of phenomenology and of its self-critical motivation. The book is divided into three thematic parts. The first part comprises historical and theoretical contributions in the phenomenological field. The second focuses on important figures in the history of philosophy, particularly in connection with phenomenology. The third investigates the relationship between phenomenology and mathematical sciences. This book will appeal to scholars and graduate students working in phenomenology, philosophy of mathematics, and the history of philosophy.

Empathy is widely acknowledged as a central, if not necessary, mechanism for understanding works of art, and even as the mode of engagement that mediates art’s edifying effects. Bringing together 15 essays by established scholars, this volume probes the character and role of empathy in our engagement with different forms of art, but also the value of such engagement for cognition, our emotive life, and our moral stance. Opening with a historical reconstruction of the origins of the concept of empathy, the volume develops in four parts that explore in turn our empathic engagement with fictional characters, the cognitive value of such engagement, its relevance for moral agency, as well as the thorny issue of empathic engagement with the inanimate in art, focusing on music and architecture. With an interest in both aesthetics and philosophy of mind, the volume provides an in-depth discussion of these themes, giving careful attention to historical, systematic, and interdisciplinary perspectives.
