Festivals celebrate occasions and moods and generate their own realities that manifest as living memories. Festivals transform people, allowing them to take on unfamiliar roles. Festivals also change places, give rise to new public spheres, and are capable of bringing together critical as well as joyful, angry and enthusiastic groups with resulting impacts on cities and societies. The festival is also closely linked to the display of political or social power. Those who take part suspend existing rules or create new ones. The MAK exhibition DAS FEST brings art, cultural and social history to life. The book that accompanies the exhibition brings together the expert opinions of the MAK team as well as those of renowned authors and explores essential aspects of festival design. Festivals as a source of inspiration: from happenings to religious holidays With contributions by Chiara Baldini, Brigitte Felderer, Lili Hollein, Werner Oechslin, and many more MAK exhibition

The iconic designs that are still handcrafted today by the Auböck workshop, now in its fourth generation in Vienna, were ahead of their time from the beginning and shaped Austrian design across generations. The book and exhibition focus on the defining era of the interwar and post-war periods and also refer to the experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism. For the first time, works by the sculptor and textile artist Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987), who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the Bauhaus in Weimar, are also presented. The book contains, among other things, newly published photographs of the essential, original works shown in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein, texts by Kimberly Bradley on the workshop in the international design context, by Nina Schedlmayer on the history of the workshop, and by Bärbel Vischer on the surrealist perspective on the comprehensive oeuvre of the Auböck workshop. New social challenges and innovative forms of work influence the design of objects just as much as new production techniques, marketing opportunities, and distribution channels. The catalog presents 100 selected objects – furniture, household appliances, tools, lighting, consumer electronics and accessories as well as designs for personal care, health, and mobility – and reveals the diversity and innovative power of Austrian product design from 2000 to 2025. These objects are role models of quality design in terms of functionality, technological innovation, resource conservation, and ergonomics. They also demonstrate wit, charisma, and emotional appeal. Even in familiar objects, there are surprising and exciting things to discover.
