It is generally acknowledged today that the most effective strategy for toxic and hazardous waste management is: reduction, reuse and recycle. However, to date most of the activity has been in treatment technologies. This book focuses on recent technological issues commercially available or in various stages of implementation. Developments in the US and Europe in the area of waste management policy and regulation are also examined since management and remediation has usually been conducted in response to regulatory requirements. This book serves as a resource on technologies and methodologies for the environmental protection manager involved in decisions concerning the management of toxic and hazardous waste.

This book evaluates current technology and policy practices in the United States and Western Europe in the areas of environmental risk assessment, risk prioritization and risk management, and recommends strategies for successful risk management regarding cleanups in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).The primary focus is on the evaluation of proven risk management stategies, which can gain public and regulatory acceptance, and thereby accelerate the demonstration and use of innovative US and host country environmental technologies in CEE. This will, in turn, help to accelerate the use of innovative, cost-effective cleanup systems at US DOE sites, and the use of US environmental technologies in foreign markets.The book emphasizes using risk management strategies as key components of integrated life cycle systems designed to treat hazardous/radioactive waste, and to remediate soil/groundwater plumes. Other topics of discussion include: partnerships with international companies for commercial applications; acceptance by CEE governments; and relationships to other US government initiatives.

This Seminar has again gathered, in 2015, over one hundred scientists from 43 countries in an interdisciplinary effort that has been going on for the last 32 years, to examine and analyze planetary problems which had been followed up, all year long, by the World Federation of Scientists' Permanent Monitoring Panels.

A full day session was devoted to the Disarmament and Proliferation Regime, in collaboration with the Government of Italy and international institutions.
