The partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947 was a turning point for the area, irrevocably altering the fortunes of the people of South Asia. This new three-volume reader brings together an array of materials drawing upon new theoretical insights and fresh bodies of data which critically examine the effects of that momentous division. Organized thematically, the contents cover a range of topics including: borders and boundaries; refugeehood and displacement; majorities and minorities; citizenship; diaspora; and the construction of post-colonial national identities. The set includes a critical introduction and provides a thematic overview identifying new developments and key debates. Presenting a plurality of viewpoints, the collection brings a new perspective to the literature by integrating topics within a comparative framework encompassing India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Bringing together a range of South Asian perspectives on rising China in a comparative framework, an attempt has been made, for the first time, to identify and examine the political, economic and socio-cultural stakeholders and constituencies that influence the respective policy of individual South Asian countries towards China. The essays also project how their mutual relations are likely to be shaped by these. The book is especially relevant today owing to China’s growing weight in Asian and global affairs.

In migration studies, the nexus between migration and development in the global South has been meticulously debated. However, a unanimous resolution to this debate has not been found, due to the ever-changing nature of international migration. This book provides the basis for a reconceptualization of key features in Southeast Asia's history. Scholars from Europe, America, and Asia examine evolutionary patterns of Europe's and Japan's Southeast Asian empires from the late nineteenth century through World War II, and offer important insights into the specific events of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. In turn, their different perspectives on the political, economic, and cultural currents of the "post-colonial" era - including Southeast Asia's gradual adjustment to globalizing forces - enhance understanding of the dynamics of the decolonization process.
